I can't believe how lucky we have been to be able to review a holiday park in one of our favourite places in the whole wide world. We've just come back from a four night break at St Ives Holiday Village, one of John Fowler's Holiday Parks.
St Ives Holiday Village is situated in Cornwall, about 16 miles away from Lands End. It was quite a distance for us to travel, but well worth it. I've written before about my love of Cornwall - Newquay in particular. It stems back to my childhood. I had the best holidays ever in Newquay with my family.
We arrived at the site just before our 2:00 P.M. check in. and we were met by very pleasant and organised staff, who directed us to our home for the next four nights. We were allocated a Platinum lodge which sleeps six and I believe they are new on the park this year. In fact I noticed that there is a development plan in operation for upgrading the older accommodation on the park in the future.
Our lodge was amazing. It was just so comfortable, homely and modern. There was 2 bedrooms, one with an ensuite, a bathroom containing a shower enclosure and a roomy kitchen and living area. Take a look at the pictures.
There was everything we could think of for cooking and we enjoyed a nice evening in one night, because Great British Bake Off was on and we planned a nice meal in. It was so comfortable, that that's what we felt like doing.
On the other nights, we did venture out to the on-site club to experience the entertainment. It was quite varied and catered for most age ranges. There was a humorous panto on, on the first night and a boy band on another. The only thing that didn't suit us as a family with little ones, was the bingo, which was on from 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m with ticket sales for 30 minutes before this. This is time, in my opinion, that should be spent entertaining the little ones and the bingo played a little later.
In addition to the night time entertainment, there was a day time programme too. Lauren went den building on one of the mornings and completed a scavenger hunt around the site on another. She also went to use the indoor pool and loved the flume in there.
The holiday park itself is situated in a wooded area and it is perfect for exploring with little ones. There's a nature trail provided in the welcome pack, which looked quite good for older children. We enjoyed letting Harry and Matthew walk freely around the site with us, instead of having them in the pram. They loved going into the 'jungle' as they called it and they made the most of their binoculars from the decked patio area of our lodge.
The site is about 4 miles away from St Ives itself, but there is a well stocked shop on site and we also thought the beer garden was really nice too.
Car parking in St Ives is a complete nightmare, but luckily we already knew this, so we took advantage of the bus service which runs from the site every hour. £4.50 for adults and £2.25 for children over 5, return. We managed to travel in on an open topped bus on one of the days, and the kids loved this experience. The views on the approach to St Ives were simply stunning.
St Ives is such a pretty place to visit. There is the harbour area and then within walking distance there are a couple of other beaches too. We spent a lovely, sunny afternoon on Porthminster beach and it was like being abroad. The sand is almost white and the sea, a gorgeous shade of blue.
If you like to shop in boutique style clothes and gift shops, then St Ives is for you. The back streets contained some really pretty and enticing shops. Don't even get me started on pasty shops and cakes. We were spoilt for choice.
If you do decide to visit St Ives Holiday Village, then try to fit in a visit to Mousehole too. I've been a couple of times to this quaint little fishing village that is steeped in history and folktales about fishermen and Stargazy pie. You must read the book, The Mousehole Cat, before you go, to fully appreciate this place and if you can visit at Christmas time, to experience the harbour lit up, it is magical.
We truly loved our little holiday to St Ives Holiday Village. Thank you, John Fowler Holidays.
